Hurricane Florence Update – Wednesday, September 12, 2018
Hurricane Florence remains a dangerous Category 4 storm with tropical-storm-force winds expected to reach the US mainland on Thursday. The storm is then expected to hit the coast near the NC/SC border Friday morning, bringing a storm surge of over 10 feet.
Our carrier partners continue their contingency preparations. Significant rainfall is expected to lead to major flooding as the storm lingers over the Carolinas and then moves further inland.
- A state of emergency has been issued for the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. Georgia was just added to this list.
- A Mandatory evacuation has been issued for all Coastal areas in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
You should expect carrier operations to become increasingly limited at terminals in the path of the storm. Most LTL carriers have already closed their terminals supporting the NC and SC coastal areas and are announcing closures for terminals further inland. And carriers are beginning to announce embargos on any shipments consigned to locations served by these affected terminals.
On the Truckload side, carriers are evacuating drivers, trucks, and trailers from NC, SC, and VA. They are even shutting down operations in SC due to limitations on interstate traffic movements. Surcharges may be enacted by carriers to cover their additional operational costs.
