Will your freight shipment freeze?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

When the last thing you need is for shipments to freeze during transit, the first place to call is one of our operating companies.

We have decades of experience and a significant investment in the equipment necessary to safely ship freezable goods, chemicals, and hazardous materials during the frigid days of winter. Shipment protection services are available through our following brands: YRC, YRC Reimer, Holland, Reddaway, Yellow Freight and New Penn.

We offer two levels of service:

  • Freezable Protection utilizes special handling procedures, weather monitoring and indicators in our tracking system to handle freezable shipments.
  • Insulated Cover service takes our Freezable Protection service and adds a blanket of protection with technically engineered and environmentally friendly covers for drums, pallets and totes which ensure products won’t freeze at or below 32° F/1.5° C.

Our drivers can pick up your Freezable Protection and Insulated Cover shipments Monday through Friday for all direct service points in the continental U.S. and Canada. Freezable Protection pickups also are available Monday through Friday for direct shipments to Mexico.

In addition to protecting your freezable shipments while in transit, warm rooms are available for weekend usage when needed.

New labor agreement

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

YRC said today that union employees at its regional carrier, New Penn, have joined the more than 90% of its employees represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in voting “yes” to ratify a previously announced modified labor agreement.

“As employee owners and stakeholders, our union workforce has made difficult decisions and demonstrated their commitment to achieving long-term success for YRC Worldwide. Revisions to the contract enable the company to strengthen its financial position,” said Mike Smid, President of YRC Inc. and Chief Operations Officer of YRC Worldwide.

The modified agreement includes a 5% incremental wage reduction and an 18 month cessation of union pension fund contributions, which will not require repayment. Related savings from the pension and wage reduction are approximately $45 million per month, and primarily began in August. Savings increase to an estimated $50 million per month in 2010.

The company and the Teamsters are addressing employee concerns in the remaining smaller bargaining units who have yet to ratify the contract changes. This represents a small percentage of the company’s unionized workforce.

YRC Worldwide Inc., a Fortune 500 company and one of the largest transportation service providers in the world, is the holding company for a portfolio of successful brands including YRC, Yellow Freight, YRC Reimer, YRC Glen Moore, YRC Logistics, New Penn, Holland and Reddaway. YRC Worldwide has the largest, most comprehensive network in North America with local, regional, national and international capabilities. Through its team of experienced service professionals, YRC Worldwide offers industry-leading expertise in heavyweight shipments and flexible supply chain solutions, ensuring customers can ship industrial, commercial and retail goods with confidence. The company is headquartered in Overland Park, Kan.

We combined the best

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The marketplace is changing. So are we.

Last September we shifted into high gear to accelerate the integration of the Yellow Transportation and Roadway networks. Since then, we’ve been working to bring a new company with new capabilities to a marketplace looking for new transportation solutions.

On March 1, 2009 we are YRC: a unified team with heavyweight-shipment expertise, a comprehensive network with capabilities from next-day to transcontinental to intermodal, and more service centers closer to more customers than any other providers in our industry.

We combined the best of Yellow Freight and Roadway Express to create YRC.

The changes promise to continue–and we promise to keep you up-to-date.

21,000 new direct service points

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

We’re strengthening our ability to be flexible, react quickly, and roll with the economic punches. In the U.S. and globally, these are unprecedented economic times. While pressures first hit the headlines in the real estate and financial markets, new types of business challenges are being faced across all industries.

At YRC Worldwide, we continue to make significant strategic moves to navigate the current downturn and prepare for an even stronger future. We are confident the actions we are taking position us to provide you with best-in-class services and capabilities.

With the network integration of Roadway Express and Yellow Freight, YRC delivers flexible, efficient solutions supported by North America’s most comprehensive network. YRC is:

  • Adding more than 21,000 new direct service points to serve more communities and provide you with improved transit times and additional access to services
  • Operating more than 430 service centers in North America–nearly 100 more than either Roadway or Yellow individually
  • Staffing those 430+ service centers with over 35,000 genuine heavyweight experts

Beyond the service advantages the integration delivers to you, it provides the opportunity for us to make strategic financial moves:

  • Integrating the Roadway and Yellow networks creating opportunities to realign our facilities which improves efficiencies and removes redundancies
  • Creating efficiencies that benefit you through our service offerings while also creating operating savings
  • Our dedicated employees, both union and non-union, have agreed to wage reductions to ensure we’re cost-effective and properly staffed to meet your needs

Another important step is the current work with our banking group to modify the terms of our credit agreements. We are taking the actions necessary to give us the flexibility to manage our business during this economic recession and to continue providing you with exceptional global transportation and logistics services.

These steps are expected to improve our operating performance by $500 million going into 2010. That’s the type of result that paves the way for a stronger YRC Worldwide as the economy improves.

All of these fundamental steps address our near-term and future financial position, ensuring our strength and flexibility. Today, tomorrow, and into the future, you can be confident YRC Worldwide has the people, assets, and network to manage our business strategically and to better serve you, our customer.*

Doing More Cross-Border Business With Canada?

Due to the devaluation of the U.S. dollar, many companies are doing more business with our Canadian neighbors. Has your company found opportunities in Canada?

Roadway can move all of your cross-border shipments easily with fast, reliable service. With more than 24 years experience in cross-border moves, we have credibility with customs and other government agencies, are certified and approved in Homeland Security initiatives and have the information needed for moving across an international border. With our feet on the ground in Canada, interactive information systems, and sleeper team operations, we are experts in cross-border markets.

Recently, a Canadian telecommunications company began using Roadway to move goods from the U.S. into Canada after a successful year of domestic Canada moves. The transition was easy. Roadway is helping with imports of telecom equipment (such as Blackberry and Palm devices) from Mexico into their Canada locations.

The ability to use one carrier for all of their Canada, U.S. and Mexico shipments (into and out of all their branches) provides this telecommunications company with a worry free service.

New Velocity Network Just Ahead!

As we announced in the last two issues of eNews, Roadway is making some revolutionary changes to its network design. These changes will provide customers with faster service, increased reliability, and more options.

Our network enhancements are built around the creation of twelve new velocity centers where high-speed, regional shipments will be processed in a more direct and expeditious manner. All told, there will be over 18,000 lanes in the eastern half of the U.S. that will run through the new Velocity Network–and 13,000 will have transit standards that are 1 day or less than previously offered.

In fact, nearly 99% of all the Velocity Network lanes will be served in two days or less, making Roadway one of the faster providers in these lanes!*

Here are just a few examples of where service will be improved:
Philadelphia, PA to Greensville, NC–next-day Toledo, OH to Knoxville, TN–next-day Indianapolis, IN to Springfield, MO–next-day Charlotte, NC to Grand Rapids, MI–2 days Little Rock, AR to Brooklyn, NY–2 days Atlanta, GA to Boston, MA–2 days

Our new and improved regional service begins July 14–however, you don’t need to wait to see which of your shipping lanes will be improved. Your local Roadway account executive can walk you through a ZIP routing application to show you the lanes for your area, and of course, my.roadway.com will also be updated.

Cross-Border Success

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Have you been in a CVS store in the last week?  Take note of the new Rimmel displays in the cosmetic aisle.

Roadway transported those 4,500 shipments for Coty.

Coty wanted to update the displays in the stores and purchased the new units from a manufacturer in Ontario, Canada. Our Toronto Service Center did a great job staging the shipments to load on the proper trailers and securing the paperwork.

These cross-border moves traveled to every CVS store in the U.S. over a two week period.

The locomotive also jumped the tracks. The train was en route to Rocky Mount, N.C., from Cumberland, Md. There were no injuries. Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero said that crews might have the track reopened by late Thursday afternoon.

Romero said Amtrak was working to provide alternate transportation for passengers, but there weren’t enough buses to carry everyone. She said Amtrak was working with passengers on a case-by-case basis.

Independent contractor’s truck in flames

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

The Sand Flat community, north of Tyler, was rattled this morning when an air bag used to stabilize the freight truck carrying Ozarka Water labels exploded, engulfing the independent contractor’s truck in flames.

The driver escaped unharmed, said authorities on the scene. FM 16, just east of FM 14, will remain closed until the burned wreckage is removed.

Jim Seaton, Smith County fire marshal, said it appears the stabilizing bag exploded, dropping the trailer onto the tires and starting a fire that was fed by the truck’s severed fuel line.
